I am writing to you on behalf of Bishop Milner Catholic College to let you know that we have decided to undertake the Wellbeing Award for Schools (WAS).
Our work across the college in the area of wellbeing for both staff and students has been increasing particularly over the past academic year, with several initiatives already in place and with many opportunities provided for all to discuss this most relevant subject. We believe that focusing on ensuring effective practice and provision, we will be even better placed to promote the emotional wellbeing and mental health of everyone in our college community.
Building on the work already underway, the WAS would be the next step for us so that we create a long term culture within the college and embed an ethos where mental health is regarded as the responsibility of all. This will enhance not only the academic excellence of the college but work in harmony with staff, student and parent social awareness of emotional wellbeing and the impact this has on us all.
Although we already have provision in place for staff and students, gaining the award will help us to further demonstrate our commitment to:
- Promoting mental health as part of everyday school life
- Improve the emotional wellbeing of our staff and students
- Ensure mental health problems are identified early and appropriate support provided
- Offer provision and intervention that matches the needs of our staff and students
- Raise awareness of the importance of mental health awareness
- Capture the views of parents/carers, students and staff on mental health issues
The award process is still in its infancy and we would hope to achieve verification and accreditation by the end of July 2020. In time I will be sending an online evaluation form to you and would be grateful if you would take the time to complete this anonymously and return to college. This will help us, alongside evaluations from our students, staff and other stakeholders, begin to put our action plan together.
If you have any questions regarding the Wellbeing Award for Schools, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me,
