Dance

Our mission in the dance department is to encourage personal achievement through dance. We aim to nurture innovation and inspire new dancers and new dance works, to build self esteem and improve social skills. We believe in high quality teaching of dance to lead the way in contributing to the quality of life for school and the wider community.

By engaging in dance we provide opportunities for our students to:

  • Explore a variety of dance styles and cultures
  • Develop practical skills to support a healthy active lifestyle
  • Expand imagination and express themselves in an artistic and original capacity
  • Enhance social, team working and listening skills
  • Understand dance through performance, choreography and appreciation
  • Value their own achievements and others
  • Be a critical audience

Accommodation & Resources

Dance is taught in our dance studio. This is purpose built with full mirrors, ballet bars and contains lighting and sound facilities.

Key Stage 3

Students in Year 7 and 8 are taught dance as part of their PE curriculum. They will experience two, one hour long lessons a week for a six week period at 2 intervals in the year.

Key Stage 4

Dance is a new option and the students study GCSE Dance according to the AQA specification.

The course is split into 80% practical and 20% theory with four individual units.

  • Unit 1: Critical Appreciation
  • Unit 2: Set Dance
  • Unit 3: Performance
  • Unit 4: Choreography

Key Stage 5

Dance is a developing option at Key Stage 5.

Extra Curricular

As a new and exciting department we have extra-curricular opportunities to suit all year groups, abilities and dance styles. These include open Junior and Senior dance clubs for any students for a passion for dance to enjoy. We have recently auditioned across the college for the BMCC Dance Company – a selection of the school’s best dance talent. There is also a popular boys street dance group.

We also feel passionate about experiencing dance performance and students opting for dance will enjoy regular theatre visits and opportunities to perform in the local community and beyond.
