Design & Technology Department

Design and Technology at Bishop Milner is a successful department. We are forward thinking in its delivery of Key Stage 3,4 and 5. Our aims are to provide opportunities for our students to:

  • enjoy turning ideas into reality.
  • to strive for successful outcomes.
  • be creative and develop their understanding of design.
  • work independently.
  • To enhance their skills in a full range of outcome areas.

We have high expectations of all our students. We deliver Design and Technology with a coherent and single vision of what makes good design and technology activity.

Accommodation & Resources

Design Technology is taught in specialist environments. The Food Technology room is fully equipped and has ten kitchen stations. The 2 Multi Material workshops are in an open plan lay out offering our students the most flexible of accommodation. One of the spaces is a conventional workshop layout containing a range of workshop machines all with central dust extraction. The other is a prototyping and modelling space along with a large design studio containing our CAD CAM facility.

Key Stage 3

Our KS3 curriculum offers outcomes in a wide range of areas. Our students move around the curriculum area during the year and work with the specialist staff in their specialist areas. The outcomes currently offered are resistant materials, textiles, food, structures and electronics.

Key Stage 4

Students can currently opt to study Product Design or Catering at GCSE. The courses are often oversubscribed and are demanding and enjoyable.

Key Stage 5

Students opting to continue their design education in our department study Product Design with the OCR board. This very successful course has aided a number of students to reach for university courses in design based subjects.

Staffing

The Design and Technology team consists of specialist teaching staff supported by two technicians. All staff are very supportive and enjoy working together. All staff contribute to the planning of courses and the writing of schemes of work. We aim to use our enthusiasm to motivate students and high expectations lead to success at all levels.
