Support for Struggling Readers

The ‘Matthew Effect’ refers to the idea that when children struggle at early reading, they begin to dislike reading. Students can arrive at college with gaps in their reading for a variety of reasons.

At Bishop Milner we look to support our reluctant readers to endeavour they all have equity in their classrooms. We use multi-tiered screening to identity students who need further support with their reading. We recognise students with significant reading barriers need systematic and effective intervention. We use a range of strategies, investing in Lexia, Power Up and Ruth Miskin Phonics Fresh Start programmes to help deliver tailored interventions. We also run groups with Reading Buddies for Peer to Peer support, in addition using ‘spotlighting’ classroom approaches; supporting our students both in and out of the classroom.
