Disciplinary Literacy recognises that literacy skills are both general and subject specific. It recognises the value that teachers of every subject are teachers of reading.  

At Bishop Milner, all teachers possess a shared understanding that teaching reading is at the heart of each subject, recognising the unique strands inherent in teaching for reading within their subjects.   

Our curriculum provides reading opportunities. Once a week student read a non-fiction news article during ‘Read and Reflect’ mornings.  

Within subjects our teachers regularly model fluency; teach their subject specific vocabulary explicitly; monitor understanding and support students by providing background knowledge in their specialisms.  

All teachers at Bishop Milner are teachers of reading.
